The book describes many different approaches how and why to keep a company small.It is very interesting to see how different operators find ways to create and preserve value without compromising integrity.The book shows how to operate a business by seemingly deviating from the classic mba model.A Very refreshing and inspiring read.

Der Autor sieht sein Buch als so etwas wie ein Frontbericht von Firmen die sich als eine neue Klasse von Unternehmen 'quietly and gradually' herausgebildet hat. Und die hat - im Vergleich zu den Großunternehmen, deren Ziel vor allem Wachstum ist - eine ganze Reihe von Vorteilen, die man vielleicht als nachhaltig zusammenfassen könnte. Alle sind regional verwurzelt, sie gehen anders mit Verantwortung um, sehen sich in der Regel eher Unternehmer als Manager usw. Schade ist eigentlich nur, dass es so einseitig dargestellt ist, eine Diskussion wäre hilfreich gewesen.Man kann es allen empfehlen, die das Mittelmaß vermeiden wollen und trotzdem eine außerordentliche Organisation sein wollen.

Ich musste das Buch für eine Englischvorlesung in der Uni kaufen, aber es lohnt sich.Das Buch ist gut geschrieben und auch für nicht Muttersprachler gut verständlich (es kommt mit erstaunlich wenig betriebswirtschaftlichen Fachausdrücken aus).Es bietet interessante Einblicke in kleine (leider nur US-amerikanische) Unternehmen, die bestimmte Dinge anders machen als ihre großen Konkurrenten, dadurch aber besonders gut sind und sich hervorheben.In den Kapiteln beleuchtet Burlingham immer einen besonderen Aspekt der Unternehmensführung und hat durch seine ausgiebige Recherche immer mehrere praktische Beispiele dazu.Da die Beispiele manchmal etwas langatmig sind gibt es nur vier Sterne.
